Mel originally took up cycling  when she started doing sprint triathlons as a way to keep fit. Having completed several sprint distance triathlons she was sucked into going up to the next distance until she found herself on the start line of an Ironman! When a running injury put an end to her triathlon career she decided to focus on cycling.

In 2015 she signed up to Rebecca Slack’s South East Women’s TT Series (SEWTTS) entered in the road bike category. One of the races in the series was the National 25 mile champs, originally intending to ride this on her road bike she had a last minute change of plan when she found out that there was no one from the road bike category racing that day and was advised to beg, borrow or steal something more aero! She ended up riding a TT bike for the first time in what was also her first 25 mile TT and taking 3rd place. Spurred on by her success she also entered the National 10 mile and Closed Circuit champs and placed 2nd in both races.
